Examination of Conscience // November
Act of the presence of God
- Do I stir up my faith in Christ’s presence in his Church? Do I ever let my faith become weakened because of my own shortcomings or those of other members of the People of God?
- Do I truly love the Roman Catholic Church with a filial love? Do I avoid exposing unnecessarily any human defects or mistakes in her members?
- Am I united to the Pope and the pastors who assist him in the Church? Do I help them by my prayer and mortification, and by my acceptance of the Church’s Magisterium?
- Do I strive to serve the Church without seeking any temporal gain?
- Do I appreciate the help I receive from my brothers and sisters in the faith through the communion of the saints? Do I offer up things I find difficult for those in the Church who are in need?
- Do I respect and defend the personal freedom of others? Do I ever think I have a monopoly on the truth in topics that are matters of opinion?
- Do I realize that the unity of the Church does not mean uniformity in human opinions or in ascetical and apostolic methods? Do I defend my own freedom and that of the others by preventing anyone from imposing an obligation that is not required by the Church?
- Do I take responsibility for the consequences of my own decisions and actions? Am I careful never to shift responsibility for my actions onto the Church or my Christian vocation?
- Am I seeking out ways to help re-christianize society and public life?
- Am I trying, within my possibilities, to create in society a climate of justice, freedom, loyalty and understanding? Do I strive to sow around me the peace, joy and charity of Christ?
- Do I fulfill all my civic duties in order to contribute to the good of society?
- Do I always act with responsibility and fortitude, in the awareness that one day I will have to give an account to God for my actions? Is God’s judgment my primary concern? Do I let what others may think of me influence my actions?
- Do I sometimes consider the eternal truths in my prayer- death, judgment, heaven and hell? Do I draw from these considerations resolutions of reparation and purification, and greater apostolic zeal?
Act of contrition
Points for Personal Prayer //
Hope:
- Do everything unselfishly, for pure love, as if there were neither reward nor punishment. But in your heart foster the glorious hope of Heaven. (The Way 668)
- At the time of temptation, think of the love that awaits you in Heaven: foster the virtue of hope -it is not a lack of generosity (The Way 139)
Joy:
- True virtue is not sad and repulsive, but pleasantly joyful. (The Way 657)
- The cheerfulness you should have is not the kind we might call physiological -like that of a healthy animal. Rather, it is the supernatural happiness that comes from the abandonment of everything, including yourself, into the loving arms of our father God. (The Way 659)
